Science. Exercise. Explore. Develop.

S.E.E.D. (Science. Exercise. Explore. Develop.) - formerly Summer Enrichment Day Camp - is a four-week enrichment program for rising fourth- through sixth-grade students designed to enhance their knowledge in the vast array of health careers and biological sciences, as well as provide one-on-one tutoring in the core subjects of math and reading. The program exposes participants to all aspects of the health and medical fields, including medicine, dentistry, occupational therapy, nursing, physical therapy, pharmacy, life sciences and healthy lifestyles. Students participate in tours, hands-on activities and lectures from a variety of health care professionals and educators.

Incoming college freshmen participating in the Acceleration program — a program designed for pre-health students at VCU — provide the one-on-one tutoring for SEDC students.

During the summer of 2009, students participated in several tours, including a medical operating room, the Tompkins-McCaw Library for the Health Sciences, the School of Dentistry and School of Nursing and the departments of Nurse Anesthesia, Physical Therapy and Radiology.

Students heard presentations from VCU Campus Police; the Center for Human-Animal Interaction; Richmond’s fire department; Life Evac; and ElderFriends, a program of VCU’s Department of Gerontology. They witnessed a Jell-O® Brain Dissection, learned about dental health from the Virginia Department of Health and took sign language lessons. Students also made field trips to places such as the Richmond headquarters of the United Network for Organ Sharing, the Museum of the Confederacy, the Science Museum of Virginia, the James River Park and the VCU Rice Center. Many of these activities are planned again for the 2010 summer program.

Please note: The S.E.E.D. summer program has reserved spaces for students from Henrico, Richmond, Charles City and Hopewell public schools. Other students submitting an online application will be added to a waiting list for spaces not filled by these school districts.
